Women's Health FAQs

Pelvic Health Physio may seem new and daunting. It is natural to have a lot of questions and uncertainties. Please click on the questions below for answers to our most commonly asked questions.

A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is a qualified physiotherapist who has further experience and training specific to Womens and Pelvic Health. Our Pelvic Health Physiotherapists are experts in both Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (ie. muscle and joint injury and dysfunction) as well as pelvic specialists. Hence they can help with pregnancy related back and pelvic pain, advice with return to exercise and activity after pregnancy, incontinence issues, education and rehabilitation following prolapse surgery, and help for a range of conditions causing pelvic pain symptoms

We allow up to 1 hour for your first Pelvic Health Assessment. Subsequent appointment times vary from 30 min to 1 hour depending on your individual requirements and circumstances

The Initial Pelvic Health Assessment is $160. Additional surcharges for Internal Examinations, Ultrasound Assessments and and any supplies/equipment may also apply

At the end of your Pelvic Health Assessment, you will be given a Personal Treatment Plan and outline of the recommended treatment schedule. This Plan will consider your assessment findings, goals and other lifestyle factors such as how far you have to travel for the appointments. We will always consider what will set you up for the best chance of success

An Internal Examination is not mandatory. Your physiotherapist will discuss the benefits of an Internal Examination for your particular symptoms and you can choose whether to have one, or perhaps even postpone it for a subsequent visit. Your physiotherapist can use other techniques such as real time ultrasound if you feel more comfortable with this option.

This is a personal choice. Your physiotherapist can still perform an Internal Examination during your period, or alternatively there are still many aspects of the assessment that can be performed and the Internal Examination, if required can be performed at a subsequent visit. Please do allow 24 hours notice of rescheduling.

“Real Time Ultrasound” uses the same ultrasound technology that is used to scan pregnancies and muscle injuries. However, as Physiotherapists we use the ultrasound “pictures” to assess muscle function as it is working – hence the name “real-time”.

The real time ultrasound can be used to assess any muscle; however, Pelvic Health Physiotherapists use it specifically to assess abdominal and pelvic floor muscle function as well as to objectively measure and assess any separation of the abdominal muscles that can occur during pregnancy.

This is akin to a Rugby player asking if he can just go to the gym after a significant knee injury. A thorough assessment and treatment of all the factors involved greatly improves outcomes

No, the Internal Examination is not recommended until 6 weeks post birth. Prior to this, the tissues are still in a delicate healing phase. However, if you are having symptoms and concerns prior to 6 weeks post natal, your physiotherapist can still perform many other tests and assessments to help you gain confidence on the path to recovery.

Yes. The pelvic floor is not only under strain as a result of delivery, the increase weight of the baby during pregnancy also puts an extra pressure on the pelvic floor and can lead to the same issues of incontinence and prolapse as with vaginal delivery.
